A Case for Modesty

August 3, 2016

Alright. Let’s talk about modesty for a minute, ladies.

Growing up in a predominantly LDS community, it’s a word that got tossed around a fair amount. I always assumed that when modesty was taught, it meant the typical definition. You know, no low-cut shirts, wear tankinis, keep the shorts close to the knee…etc. That’s what I’ve always thought modesty was, no questions asked.

Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of backlash on the internet about girls and modesty, specifically about how it’s OUR choice and we should be able to wear what WE want. Yeah, I understand that, and agree with it to a certain degree. We should be able to wear what we want, but modesty isn’t even about what we wear. It’s about who we ARE. To be modest is demonstrate self-respect and maturity. It’s not about dressing so that guys won’t stare or conforming to some kind of societal standard. I’ve come to learn that being modest isn’t about the clothes that are worn—that’s not what it’s about at all. Modesty also includes speech. It includes the way we treat others. Modesty, yes, is shown by the clothes we wear, but it’s also shown in the way we treat those who we surround ourselves. It’s the way we demonstrate our true character to others.

So basically, this post is a PSA saying that ladies, IT’S OKAY TO BE MODEST AND BE YOURSELF. Being modest isn’t about leaving who you are and conforming to something else. It’s about being your best self. It’s an outward expression in the way you talk, you act and the way you are. It’s about loving who you are, in the body that you were given. It’s not about the clothes you wear, it’s about the way you are.

LOVE YOURSELF. You are incredible.
